Sacramental Program

Celebrations of the sacraments are not isolated events.
They take place within a process of growth in faith, from birth to adolescence.

“As we are signed with the gift of the Spirit in Confirmation,
God brings us to the full stature of the Lord Jesus to continue his mission in the world.”

Parents share the journey of faith with their children from Baptism to Confirmation and full initiation with the Eucharist.  As the first educators of their children, parents create the family within which children share values, learn how to pray, how to treat others, and how to live meaningful lives. Parents play an important role in helping their child understand the faith.

Discernment of a child’s readiness for the Sacraments by parents and pastor is more important than age or year level.  As a guide the Archdiocesan policy suggests that
  • in the year when children turn 8 they are sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit in Confirmation,
  • in the year when children turn 9 they are welcomed to the Lord’s Table and receive Holy Communion for the first time.
  • in the year when children turn 10 they are prepared to celebrate more fully the Sacrament of Penance.

The Our Lady of Graces Sacramental Program involves parent meetings, workshops for parents and candidates (at which the whole family is welcomed), and whole of Parish celebrations.
